Caring for your hair
Raw curly hair is defined by its movement, texture and natural variation. Each curl carries its own character, and its beauty is best preserved through gentle, consistent care.
The aim is not to control the curl, but to allow it to remain soft, defined and full of life.
Preserve the curl
Curly hair should be handled with care, particularly when dry. Excessive brushing can separate the curl pattern, create frizz and place unnecessary tension on the hair.
To refresh the curls, lightly mist with water and gently reshape with your fingers. If further detangling is needed, use a wide-tooth comb while the hair is damp and conditioned, beginning at the ends and working upwards.
Wash with care
Wash the hair as required using a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo, followed by a rich, nourishing conditioner.
Allow the water to move through the hair without excessive manipulation. Apply conditioner generously through the lengths and ends, using your fingers to gently separate the curls.
Rinse with cool to lukewarm water.
Restore moisture
Curly hair responds particularly well to moisture.
After washing, gently press the hair with a soft towel to remove excess water. Do not rub, twist or wring the curls.
While the hair remains damp, apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or a lightweight curl cream through the lengths. Gently scrunch the hair upwards to encourage the curl pattern to reform.
Allow the hair to air dry where possible.
When using heat
Frequent heat styling can gradually alter the natural curl pattern. When heat is necessary, always apply a heat protectant and use a moderate temperature.
A diffuser on a low setting may be used to dry the curls while helping to preserve their natural definition.
While wearing
Minimise friction wherever possible. Sleeping with the hair loosely gathered beneath a silk or satin scarf, or against a silk or satin pillowcase, can help preserve the curl pattern and reduce unnecessary friction.
Avoid excessive brushing throughout the day. Instead, use your fingers to gently separate or reshape individual curls when needed.
If exposed to chlorine or salt water, rinse the hair thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
When not in use
Ensure the hair is completely dry before storing.
Store loosely in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid compressing or tightly folding the curls, as this can disturb their natural formation.
Curly hair is at its most beautiful when it is allowed to retain its natural character. With considered care, its softness, definition and movement can be preserved for years to come.
